A search engine is a program which combs through text sources for particular buzzwords and then makes a ranked listing of the results available. In both scenarios, when you ask a search engine to find information, you're really looking through the index which has been created by the search engine.

That means you are not actually searching the Internet. These are huge databases of information that is collected and stored and subsequently searched. This explains why sometimes a search on a commercial search engine, usually will return results that are, in fact, dead links. Since the search results are based on the index, if the index hasn't been updated since a Web page became worthless the search engine treats the page as still an active link even though it no longer is good. It will remain this way until the index is updated.
